Institutional Working Approaches
HANDS Nepal will enhance the following approaches while developing and implementing all interventions as cross cutting ingredients:
- Service Delivery: Contrary to focusing only on software activities, HANDS Nepal will strive to maintain a balance between capacity building, awareness raising and direct service delivery relating to WASH, health and alternative energy areas. HANDS Nepal intend to support the target communities through supply of necessary materials along with group mobilization and training to bring about tangible and physical changes. Efforts will be made in promoting community participation and inclusion in the program interventions.
- Capacity Building: HANDS Nepal intends to incorporate capacity development of target communities through training and orientation in every project that will be undertaken for sustainable operation. Community user groups will be equipped with basic technical and financial back up along with institutional support by helping them formulate and follow necessary rules and guidelines relating to the project they undertake.
- Advocacy and Research: HANDS Nepal intends to be involved in advocacy and research to create evidence based program interventions. Advocacy actions will be directed towards expanding basic education, health, livelihood and WASH services in the communities for bringing about the changes in the behavior and practices among people. Research will be conducted to identify and confirming the interventions related to WASH, education, solid waste management, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
- Mobilization of Local Resources: Local resource mobilization is another key approach that HANDS Nepal intends to incorporate in all its program interventions. HANDS believes that sense of ownership over the project will be strengthened among the target communities if local resources are mobilized. HANDS will strive to involve a certain proportion of financial and technical resources of local government and target households in every program intervention.
- Participatory Approach: HANDS Nepal will focus on ensuring the participation of target communities in general, excluded and marginalized groups including women and children in particular from the early stage of project designing to the completion in order to promote sense of belonging. Community user committees will be formed with necessary orientation and they will be made key decision makers in the entire process of their project. Participation of relevant stakeholders will also be sought in every project intervention.
- Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: HANDS Nepal understand the significant need for gender equality and social inclusion in any program interventions to counter exclusion and all forms of discriminations that exist in the society based on gender and caste. HANDS intends to promote the rights for all excluded and marginalized groups to have access to education, health, WASH and other basic services in line with constitution of Nepal. HANDS will seek to mainstream children, men and women from excluded and marginalized ethnic and caste groups as well as the poorest of the poor in the process of development and to reduce existing social and economic disparities.
- Child right and child protection: Child protection will be focused in order to prevent, protect, promote and exercise of child right among children and young people. The child right and child protection will be taken as the cross cutting issue in all the development projects. HANDS will follow its child protection policy, code of conduct and safeguarding policy in its development intervention. All staff, members and volunteers at HANDS will be oriented on these policies for its effective materialization at project areas as well as at the work place.
- Women empowerment and leadership: HANDS Nepal will take into account issues like women empowerment and leadership and contribute for women’s empowerment by providing basic education, vocational training, training for self-employment, legal aid, protection for women and self-awareness programs. HANDS will continue and scale up education projects targeting girls, as it is the key to women’s empowerment and solve issues like gender inequality and poverty and to foster inclusive economic growth as well.
- Learning and Sharing: HANDS Nepal will have emphasis on documenting the successful and good practices relating to all its interventions and sharing them at different platforms so that they could be replicated for wider change in the country. In the meantime, HANDS also intends to learn from failure for not repeating the same mistakes. Coordination and linkages with different networks, clusters and alliances will be made for sharing the learning and dissemination of the best practices.
